Two tips for those who have set up funeral homes and now need to buy workwear

Posted on: 23 September 2019

If you are in need of some workwear to wear in your newly-established funeral home, the tips offered here might help you when selecting your new garments.

Limit yourself to dark-coloured garments

Whilst it is not necessarily vital for all of your workwear to be black, it is sensible to pick out dark-coloured garments (such as charcoal, navy, dark brown, etc.). The reason for this is as follows: what you wear in this type of business environment matters a great deal; the garments you choose must be in keeping with the solemn atmosphere of your funeral home.

If your workwear were to consist mostly of very rich and vivid-coloured items, your clients might find your outfits quite jarring and inappropriate. It would, for example, be very disrespectful to discuss a grieving person's plans for their deceased sibling's funeral whilst wearing a turquoise, polka-dot shirt or a vibrant yellow dress. These colours are both loud and cheery, and as such, are wholly unsuitable for a funeral director to wear whilst having this type of sombre and difficult conversation with someone who is probably in the depths of despair.

Furthermore, vivid-coloured workwear is very attention-grabbing and wearing it would put your clients' focus on you, when really, they should only be concerned with their own emotions and the funeral they are trying to plan. By opting for dark-toned garments for your workplace, you will not only be demonstrating that you respect your clients, but you will also be allowing them to concentrate solely on themselves.

Ensure that the outfits you choose for the warmer seasons are still appropriate to wear in the funeral home

If the summers in the area where your establishment is situated get very hot, then you must make sure that the outfits you buy to wear in your workplace during this season will help you to avoid feeling overheated, whilst still enabling you to look formal and fairly solemn.

For example, whilst removing your blazer or suit jacket, under which you are wearing a short-sleeved shirt, might cool you down quite quickly on a hot day, it won't make you look very professional or particularly solemn. As such, it might be best to pick out a few very lightweight suit jackets or blazers, made from either linen or cotton, as this would enable you to stay cool, without having to remove your outer garments and lessen the formality of your outfit.
